Common questions from public observing nights
When we hold public events, we get all kinds of questions. Here are some of the most common ones.
Usually the answer is no. Most people are surprised to find that you can set up a telescope on any night and find something interesting to look at. It is common for planets to line up across the sky so you can see two, three, or even more at the same time. Even when planets are not in a good viewing location, there are dozens of easy-to-find targets for inexperienced astronomers to enjoy.
This is a difficult question to answer. Many people expect a magnification value like 200X, but that number is not specific to the telescope and changes with the eyepiece. In theory, a telescope can be set up to 500X or more, but useful magnification on a good night is usually around 250X. A better question is the telescope aperture. Aperture is the size of the opening that accepts light: the mirror diameter on a reflector or the lens diameter on a refractor. The more light collected, the brighter the image.
An intermediate telescope package with mount and decent accessories often runs between $1500 and $2500. You do not need to spend that much to get started. A decent Dobsonian reflector with accessories can be under $400, and there are good tabletop models under $250.
Unfortunately, no. Earth atmosphere limits all ground-based telescopes, and even in excellent conditions the smallest lunar features resolved are over a mile across. Even Hubble is not capable of finding the famous flag or other manmade lunar objects. A possible exception is lunar retroreflectors left by US and Russian missions, which can reflect lasers in ranging experiments, but very few amateur astronomers have equipment to detect that return light.
It is probably a planet, not a star. Venus is the most likely candidate because it is very bright and never gets more than 47 degrees from the sun. Depending on alignment and season, Mercury, Jupiter, Saturn, or Mars can also appear in morning or evening skies.
Tricky question. The short answer is lots. Older references listed 12, but discoveries have continued and counts have increased significantly over time. Most amateur astronomers usually see the four Galilean moons: Ganymede, Callisto, Io, and Europa. The rest are generally too dim for typical viewing conditions, and at least 8-inch aperture optics are usually needed.
